ABSTRACT

The Basic Principles in Physics of CT

Kwan-Hoong Ng
Department of Biomedical Imaging, Faculty of Medicine, University of Malaya, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

The aim of this presentation is to introduce the basic physics of computed tomography (CT) to non-radiologists and other clinical specialists. The basic physics of CT such as attenuation, CT number, windowing, filtered back projection, reconstruction are introduced followed by a review of helical scanning principle of multi-detector row CT (MDCT). Factors affecting CT image quality and radiation dose such as exposure factor, slice thickness, pitch, detector collimation are highlighted. The various dose quantities for CT namely computed tomography dose index (CTDI), dose length product (DLP) and effective dose are discussed. Total radiation burden for a whole body PET/CT scan results from PET component (~10 mSv) and CT component (~ 5 - 20 mSv). Finally the functions of the CT component in PET/CT scanning are highlighted, namely: providing the necessary attenuation correction map for PET imaging; improving precise lesion localization; and the usage of diagnostic quality CT increases resolution at the expense of radiation dose.
