ABSTRACT
Magnetic Resonance Imaging of the Breast
Wei Tse Yang
The University of Texas, Anderson Cancer Center Houston, Texas, USA
- The goals for breast cancer detection with MR imaging of the breast include the detection of early cancer such as small invasive carcinoma (< 2 cm) and ductal carcinoma in situ.
- The minimal technical requirements of breast MR imaging include assessment of morphology and kinetics.
- The clinical indications for MR imaging of the breast are as follows:
- Staging – disease extent, invasion deep to fascia (chest wall involvement - stage 3B)
- Monitoring response in patients who undergo neoadjuvant chemotherapy
- Axillary adenocarcinoma unknown primary
- Residual disease post lumpectomy
- Recurrence
- Contralateral breast screening
- Screening high-risk
There are challenges in MR imaging of the breast which will be addressedMagnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) is a sophisticated bio-imaging tool that provides data about function and can serve as an adjunct to improve MRI specificity. While contrast enhanced-MRI provides detailed spatial resolution, excellent sensitivity, and depiction of anatomy of tumor, MRS can provide a complementary biochemical image
