The objective of this study is to illustrate the characteristics and causes of artifacts in mammography and how to avoid them.
High-quality mammographic images are important because they will enhance the radiologist’s ability to interpret mammograms with high sensitivity and specificity. Artifacts may create pseudo-lesions or mask true abnormalities leading to misinterpretation. Familiarity with the numerous artifacts encountered will help the radiologists to provide accurately diagnosis. We retrospectively reviewed all artifacts in mammography encountered in our centers and classified the causes of these artifacts.
The causes of artifacts can be grouped into four categories: 1. related to the patients, 2. related to the radiologic technologist, 3. related to the mammographic unit include the bucky, cassette tray, films and intensifying screen, and 4. related to the processing and processor. Implementation of a well-organized quality control program will reduce the occurrence of artifacts.
Recognition of artifacts in mammography is instructive and will help to improve mammographic diagnostic quality.
